I loved the song since the first time I heard it. " With love, Umi" is a song on the soundtrack for Studio Ghibli's latest film "From Up on Poppy Hill". Jiro Horikoshi when he was a little child and the tag line Ikineba (生きねば, We must live) Thanks to my friend heresiarchy for the translation of the song, which can be read under the cut. She explains: "Songs that have a lot of feelings in them can connect to people's hearts, and riding on those feelings, people can fly, sweeping across the sky." Matsutoya wrote Hikoukigumo when she was sixteen years old. The singer has worked with Miyazaki earlier when she's provided two songs for Kiki's Delivery Service. The theme song Hikoukigumo (Vapour trails) is by Yumi Matsutoya. The voice for Jiro's character is provided by Hideaki Anno, the famous director of Neon Genesis Evangelion and a good friend of Miyazaki's. In his new film he tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi who is famous for designing Japan's legendary Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft which served in World War II. And ever since then the director has been interested in this topic and has drawn airplanes, battleships and similar. When Miyazaki was a little child his family owned a company that made rudders for A6M Zero fighter planes. However, his new film, Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises), specifically concentrates on this love for airplanes and aviation. Miyazaki's fascination with aviation and flight can be seen in many of his other films like Porco Rosso, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and similar. I feel it is something very personal to him and I can't wait to see it and judge it myself! And he's said that The Wind Rises is his first film that he's cried on. This time he decided to make a film for himself and not children hence the hints of a tragic ending. One thing is that it isn't targeted at children.

But it is also slightly different compared to his other films. The Wind Rises also deals with themes such as war and the need to keep on living as the tagline says. He's made films to raise awareness about pollution, warn about the negative consequences of war, teach us of co-existing and imbue us with the will to live despite all odds. I believe by doing so Miyazaki wanted to somehow let Anno experience grief through this role and learn that he has to continue to live and seek happiness as the tagline of The Wind Rises is 'We must live' (生きねば).ĭuring his career as a director, Miyazaki has been making films in order to encourage children to fight for their dreams. While the tagline of Princess Mononoke is a very positive one like 'Live!' (生きろ。), the one of The End of Evangelion is very pessimistic 'So, everyone should just die.' (だから みんな、死んでしまえばいいのに…) I think that it is because of this that Miyazaki chose specifically Anno for the role of Horikoshi, whose life won't be an easy and happy one either. Another interesting fact is that Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke and Anno's The End of Evangelion were released in the same year 1997. Before making Evangelion Anno went through a four-year period of depression, which has possibly influenced the dark and psychological themes in the anime.

I feel like he's always admired Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori and wanted to make this tribute film to them.Īnother musing of mine is that Miyazaki chose Anno to voice Horikoshi not only because they are good friends and co-workers, but because of some past events in Anno's life. It is known that at a young age he was highly influenced by airplanes and they were the first objects he drew. Those ratings are rather a subjective opinion of every individual, but for once it is very telling!Īs I hear those positive opinions and see new pictures of the film my impatience grows! I am very curious to see it because I feel it is the film that Miyazaki always wanted to make. Princess Mononoke, which I consider the best film ever made, is also rated 8.4, a fact that makes me want to see the new film even more.
